The Public Design Lecture series is an initiative by the Sarawak Chapter of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAMSC) to give exposure to local designers and to raise awareness about the value of good design in our lives – with the message that “design isn’t only for special occasions, it’s for everyday and for everyone.”
IDC ARCHITECTS – TINA LAU & JEFFREY YEUNG
Tina and Jeffrey are both architects who have worked in Australia and are now based in Kuching. Together with 2 other partners, they run IDC Architects in Kuching. They will share their story on their experience working in Sarawak since their return from Australia 7 years ago.
ARKITEK JFN – MIKE BOON
The current Chairman of PAMSC, Ar. Mike Boon Chee Khian was graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Western Australia in 1989 and has been prac0cing in Kuching since then. He promotes heritage conserva0on in Sarawak by taking part in varies community engagement programmes. He will share his experiences on giving a context on conserva0on prac0ce in Sarawak.
UCSI – ASSISTANT PROFESSOR TEOH CHEE KEONG
Since 2007, the School of Architecture and Built Environment at UCSI University has incorporated the ideas of collabora0ve learning and social engagement into the curriculum. Studio projects and assignments were designed with a purpose to engage students and lecturers, individually and collec0vely, to work with NGOs, communi0es, academicians and architects to iden0fy environmental and cultural issues via a process of mapping, observing, design. The studies would result in a form of design/planning proposal, exhibi0on, ‘live build’ projects or other outcomes which could benefit the society. The school has been involved in community projects, such as Pudu Community Art Festival, Hulu Langat Art Carnival, Kuala Sepetang ‘Kaktao 46’ Community Library, PublikArt and currently Sungai Buloh Story Museum and etc. In this talk, Teoh will be sharing his experience of social engagements, and will discuss the vision and challenges of this pedagogy in architectural education.
