Synopsis

The phrase “Prevention is always better than cure” is the perfect expression for corrosion. Corrosion is not simply a maintenance problem, it can have a multitude of adverse effects like unsightly appearance, contamination of equipment and in the worst case scenario, potentially devastating health and safety effects. Furthermore, corrosion is an expensive problem. According to The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC), corrosion of metals cost about $276 billion annually.

This is why at Hempel A/S, we partner closely with customers to find solutions to their biggest challenges. From bridges to power stations and homes, our coatings can be found around the globe, protecting our customers’ buildings and assets from corrosion.

Coatings can also do so much more than just corrosion protection and beautify. Steel loses strength at elevated temperatures in an event of fire. Using Passive Fire Protection (PFP) coating systems, it limits temperature rise in steel in order to prevent structures losing stability in the event of a fire, providing additional time for emergency response and safe evacuation of the building as well as minimising damage to assets.

Part 1 will cover the fundamentals of corrosion protection, the ISO 12944 standards for corrosion protection, fundamentals of passive fire protection (aka intumescent coating), the type of different passive fire protection in the industry, best practices in passive fire protection & intumescent coatings and how passive fire protection works with corrosion protection and why durability classification is essential to selecting the correct passive fire protection coating system for your project.

Part 2 will then discuss how thicknesses of intumescent coatings can be calculated based on engineering principles and highlight the project benefits.
