Topic 1:  Waterproofing Solutions for Building Structures 

Waterproofing is a very important and broad subject. Poor waterproofing not only affects a structure’s serviceability – a leaking roof being the obvious example – but also its durability, with water penetration being a major contributor to concrete deterioration. There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for waterproofing. Structures are subjected to different stresses depending on exposure conditions. For example, an open roof slab may not be under hydrostatic pressure but suffers the effects of sudden temperature changes and wet/dry conditions. On the other hand, a deep basement structure may be in aggressive soil conditions and is likely subject to hydrostatic pressure.

The speaker will attempt to make sense of this complex subject by looking at common waterproofing problems, the different parts of building structures requiring waterproofing and the important criteria governing selection of the right solution. For example, how important is a waterproofing membrane’s elongation value for the application you are considering? The presentation will also cover best practices for successful waterproofing – for example, the importance of surface preparation and detailing – as well as some practical case studies.

Mr. Yong Wai Kit graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with an Honours degree in Civil Engineering in 2003. The early part of his career was spent with engineering consultant companies; starting with Ranhill Consulting Engineers Sdn. Bhd immediately on graduation followed by Jurutera Perunding Tegap Sdn Bhd. After that he worked 7 years with a manufacturer and supplier of construction chemicals for specialist works in waterproofing, joint sealing, concrete repair and protection. His stint in this company increased his exposure to the practical challenges of on-site problem-solving and the importance of detailing.

Mr. Yong Wai Kit joined MAPEI Malaysia in 2013, bringing with him useful experience from both sides of the construction spectrum i.e. an understanding of the needs and concerns of both the designer and the installer. He heads the Specification Team, spearheading the company’s drive to work with design engineers, architects and project owners in identifying best-fit solutions for specialist works in construction projects during the early stages of design and planning.


Topic 2: Understanding the Properties and use of adhesives for the installation of ceramic tiles, marble and natural stones

De-bonding of floor and wall tiles has been a common occurrence and remains so today. This happens despite the building industry’s long-standing experience with the use of ceramic tiles and natural stone materials. Tiles that have de-bonded not only destroy the aesthetics of the building but also cause problems to the owner and users, and pose serious safety hazards especially in façade installations. The costs of such failures can be very high, involving not just direct remedial expenses, but also construction delays, down-times and potential claims.

What are the causes of failures? How can they be avoided? A tiling finish is a complete system comprising the substrate, bedding (adhesive), ceramic tiles (or stone veneers), grout and movement joints. All components are equally important and inter-related. Adequate compatibility must exist between them for the system to function collectively. MAPEI’s technical talk aims to minimize the guess-work in material selection, specification and installation, and explains the key steps for achieving success in tile-fixing works.

In summary, this talk will increase the awareness and understanding of the different performance levels of adhesives for various applications according to the EN and ISO Standards and how to select the right material with due consideration to budget and performance.

Ms Alisonn Bong has more than 28 years of field and commercial experience in tile-and stone-fixing materials in the construction sector. She is technically well-versed in all aspects of the industry including materials, site practices, installation methods and industry standards, and has benefited from training by manufacturers in Italy.

Her first exposure to the industry was gained when she joined a Malaysian tile manufacturing company servicing local and export customers. Following this, she worked for seven years with a company specialising in stone installation works where her responsibilities included project site management.

Alisonn joined MAPEI Malaysia in 2004 and today heads the Adhesives Line Division, spearheading the company’s drive to work with Installers, Specifiers and Project Owners to develop best industry practices for tiling applications at optimum costs. Her broad experience in this field, ranging from manufacturing to installation contract works, and presently in adhesives technology, provides her with a very useful all-round knowledge of the industry. In addition, Alisonn has full access to the MAPEI Group’s wealth of knowledge and expertise in this field.

Alisonn is a working group member of the SIRIM Standards sub-committee on tile installation works.

This CPD will examine the roles and responsibilities of the Architect under the Housing Development Act (Act 118 Peninsular Malaysia 2007) and the Sarawak Housing Ordinance (1993) and related regulations.
