REGULAR or SUPER Views on Mies van der Rohe

In 1967, at the end of a career spanning more than six decades, which included the design of the Seagram Building in New York, the Lake Shore Drive Apartment Buildings in Chicago, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, architect Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed a simple gas station near Montreal. The story of that gas station serves as the point of departure for REGULAR OR SUPER, which examines Mies’ entire body of work (more than 70 buildings) and a sparse style that reflects his motto that “less is more.”

The UIA (Union Internationale des Architectes) celebrate this day annually with the aim of promoting good architecture and raising awareness of architecture among the general public.

Each year, a theme is set and this year’s theme is “Architects are City Changers”. In conjunction with this, PAMSC is holding a design competition

  • to encourage young designers to demonstrate their creativity in design thinking.
  • to inform the general public about World Architecture Day
  • to set a platform for students and professionals to exchange ideas and experiences in architecture

This CPD will examine the roles and responsibilities of the Architect under the Housing Development Act (Act 118 Peninsular Malaysia 2007) and the Sarawak Housing Ordinance (1993) and related regulations. It will cover an overview of the two sets of laws in force in West Malaysia and Sarawak and point out the major differences. A brief outline of the certification process under the housing acts and ordinances and the management of quality in relation to this certification is reviewed. Managing common defects and complaint is also considered.
